It’s a recognition for overcoming the challenges and dedication of the runners, it’s also a souvenir that freezes the joy and the moment of accomplishment in time.
The Half Marathon Triple Crown is created to recognize the half marathoners who finished three races (Carlsbad Full or Half Marathon, San Diego Half Marathon, and America’s Finest City Half Marathon) in the same calendar year. The events are hosted by a woman-owned company— In Motion Events. They are aiming to produce the very best running/walking events possible that serves the sponsors and the communities in which they are held. Comet Creative have collaborated for years with In Motion on creating medals to recognize the dedication of the runners, and in the year of 2018 and 2019, I was luckily assigned to lead the project and design the medals for runners who have persisted through all 3 races.
2019
The medal design for 2019 is inspired by Japanese holy bird crane, which symbolizes peace, eternal youth, and good virtue. It resembles to the great blue heron—a bird that's native to San Diego; represents strength, long life, determination; has a majestic/elegant tone.
Three cranes signify three races for the Triple Crown medal. We used Chinese lucky patterns in the background, the geometric shapes also brings a nice contrast to the cranes' organic body shapes. In the center is a round cut-out and a spinning disc, that represents the sun, with triple crown logo in the center.
2018
Hermes the God of the Running, it’s the symbolic reference for the spirit behind the idea of the medal design. Sun beam in the style of Art Deco, signifies the honor and the glory of the Triple Crown. Bright, golden rays reach out giving a linear balance to the organic areas; Gold color denotes winning/celebration. The geometric style of the wing depicts speed, strength, power and persistence.
The sketch features three wings opening up around the circle, symbolizing the winners who are blessed and honored by Hermes. The sun in the background represents energy strength and overcoming the challenge.
